The Code definition window offers some columns that do influence INTERACT's behavior, while logging behavioral Events, tremendously:
oExcl - Codes, with the same entry in this Exclusion lists column, are mutual exclusive. This means they do not overlap in time (during a single pass). Read Define Mutual Exclusive Codes for details. It explains how INTERACT can help you to code fast and reliable, without having to fear coding errors because of overlapping- or double logged Observation Codes.
oLex.Chain - This column is used to link a subordinated Code definition file, to build hierarchical chains of Codes. This column can be used in the coding modes Lexical, Complex and Refine existing Events. In combination with the Prefix column (and maybe even the coding option Combine codes), it is possible to implement very complex coding systems. Read Define Codes - Lexical Chains for an example.
oPrefix - This is an incredible powerful attribute and, if implemented correctly, it simplifies the Code definition process dramatically and at the same time increases the possible complexity of your coding system. Read Prefix - Create Classes on the fly, to learn more about the possibilities.
oEOC - The End Of Chain check box is only useful in the Coding modes Lexical and Complex. It ensures that you automatically return to your top-level Codes, the moment the last Code for the current Event was entered.
