Observation Settings

If your study requires a more sophisticated approach for logging Events as offered by the default Coding mode Standard, you find additional Coding modes and coding options within the Observation Settings btn_observationsettings.

A clever combination of the available options, allows you to log complex behaviors in an accurate way. Which combination of method, mode and options fits your needs best, cannot be answered in general.
Structuring the requirements and performing one or more test runs usually helps here.

Click Start - Observation - Observation settings btn_observationsettings.

The Observation Settings dialog appears, offering you all observation relevant settings:

Observation source

Depending on your source material, you need to select the right modus:

Select Multimedia Coding  if you want to analyze video and/or audio files.

Select Live Observation if you have no recorded observation material and plan to do some live observations.

Coding Mode

The activated Coding mode influences the way INTERACT reacts to your commands, during an observation.

Depending on the number of Codes you need and the way you plan to use those Codes, you need to switch to the best fitting coding mode.

INTERACT offers the following codings modes:

oStandard (ad-hoc) - For coding systems with a limited number of Codes per pass. Best for mutual exclusive Codes and regular overlaps. Each Code creates a new Event.

oLexical (post-hoc) - For sequential post-hoc coding and multi-level, complex coding systems, allowing you to enter multiple Codes to describe the same Event.

oComplex - Designed for live observation using multi-level Codes. All top-level Codes are logged with duration and require a specification for each situation.

oRefine Existing Events - For Interval based coding and adding Codes to existing Events.

Note: You can use multiple coding modes within the same document, but only one Coding mode per pass (=observational session between Start Observation and Stop Observation)

Read Coding Modes Details to learn about the details per Coding Mode.

In combination with the various coding options and the possibilities in the setup of the Observation Codes, there is a sheer endless way of implementing different coding schemes and/or coding systems.

Individual Coding Options

Besides the coding modes discussed, INTERACT offers a variety of individual coding options that you can use to optimize the handling of your codes and videos during an observation setting.

Details about each option can be found in the corresponding topics .

Note: Unfortunately, there is no general advise which combination of Codes, coding method and coding options is best for you. The best setup needs to be investigated for each project separately.

You can change the coding mode and other options any time, if you find out that you did not pick the best method.
